The Knights Drill Shirt
Unique amongst Michaelhouse sporting apparel is the famous quartered Harlequin strip worn by the first hockey XI.
From hockey’s earliest days on a rough and ready Meadows, carved out of the Balgowan landscape specifically for Inter-House matches, and through its move to a more level Knights field – site of today’s world-class Indoor Centre - and on to the 21st Century Aitkens and Punchbowl astros, Michaelhouse’s hockey pedigree remains the most standout contributor to the sport in South Africa and was at the very forefront of the game’s development in the province.
Dendrophile, Lance Knight, at various times the Estate Manager, Bursar, and then Old Boys’ Club Secretary during his decades long relationship with the school, left his enduring mark in Balgowan in the hundreds of trees planted during his tenure, most notably the magnificent giant palms which stand watch over the Memorial Hall.
Cut for comfort and versatility, the Knights Drill Shirt is a bold salute to pioneers whose inspired passion will always leave a lasting impression.
